Geographical Indications (GIs)


TRIPS defines GIs as indications which identify a good as originating in a territory/region/locality, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin.
The Geographical Indications of Goods Act 1999 has been enacted to provide GIs to goods and protect it from misuse by unauthorized persons. A Geographical Indications Registry established at Chennai.

GIs have been given to :Basmati rice, Agra Petha, Bikaneri Bhujiya, Nagpur Orange, Kanchipuram sarees, Darjeeling Tea, Channapatna Toys and Dolls etc.
